Seed Pods Programme Manager

 

Searching for an entrepreneurial ecologist to join us in restoring New Zealand’s native forestry fast, easily and efficiently!

 

About the role:

​

This role is to lead the newly formed Seed Pods Programme, that was formed to provide a fast and efficient method of native forestry restoration from the air. Ideally suited to an entrepreneurial ecologist!

The Seed Pods Programme came about from an ongoing R&D project with MPI 1BT and partners; Ahika, DOC and Otago University. This project developed pods composed of organic matter with specific tree seeds and completed trials testing for germination success then seedling survival success in different trials.   

This role is to take the leading position of the overall programme and continue it from R&D into commercial operations. This will require working with other teams, such as the drone operations team, in planning and conducting operations. The role will be hands-on throughout and from the start does not have a team, but we expect it will require growing your own team as demand grows.

 

 

Role responsibilities:

 

Ecological responsibilities:

  • Finalise the trials in collaboration with partners and make any modifications to the seed pods as required.

  • Plan clients’ projects based on sound ecological knowledge of restoration.

  • Continue testing and trials on alternative tree species as necessary.

  • Discuss projects with potential clients and provide restoration advise as needed.

 

Managerial responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall programme of the Seed Pods, from R&D into commercial operations.

  • Discuss projects with potential clients and provide restoration advise as needed.

  • Manage the production of the seed pods with the inhouse machinery for projects.

  • Coordinate with suppliers for seed and raw materials as required.

  • Coordinate with the drone team, providing the project site information so they can appropriately plan the drone operation.

 

 

The right candidate:

  • Wants to work in a start-up business pioneering tech for conservation.

  • Is a self-starter and can work independently.

  • Has entrepreneurial spirit with an eagerness for conservation gains.

  • Is an all-rounder who is capable hands-on as well as in management.

  • Enjoys a challenge, can work under pressure, and meet deadlines.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Degree in Ecology or related discipline.

  • Drivers license required.

 

 

Experience

  • Experience working on restoration projects, planting New Zealand trees.

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working as a Project Manager or Project coordinator.

  • Extensive knowledge of New Zealand native tree species.

  • Experience in QGIS or ArcGIS.

  • Mechanical aptitude desirable.

  • Experience with drones desirable.
